Job Purpose:

A Material Handler supports production and/or specific areas of the facility by pulling document material, stocking, loading, and delivering to the proper workstation. The Material Handler must be capable of supporting all areas within the facility.

Education / Training:

• Skill Level I – 1-2 years of experience or High School Education, GED, or vocational/technical training. Forklift and crane certified. Heavy Manufacturing experience preferred;

• Skill Level II – 2-5 years of experience, GED, or vocational / technical training, and/or Technical Certification;

• Skill Level III – 5+ years of experience, Vocational training, two or more Technical certifications.

Key Job Elements:

Minimum duties and responsibilities

• Receive, identify, and unload materials/parts and store in inventory;

• Identify, draw from inventory, and transport material, parts and equipment associated with the assembly of locomotives to and from assembly areas, machines, loading docks and other areas;

• Ability to clearly communicate and document the processing of incoming and outgoing cores to management and production consistently and accurately;

• Operate industrial forklift, pallet jack, mobile equipment and/or overhead cranes to perform material handling assignments;

• Accuracy in checking in items against the shipping department manifest;

• Load and unload LTL/FTL, Sea containers and Flatbed trailers accurately and safely;

• Segregate and deliver material to correct warehouse locations accurately and safely;

• Must be able to deliver urgent items to the production floor consistently, accurately, and safely;

• Able to clearly communicate the tracking of incoming parts and relay this to management quickly, consistently, and accurately;

• Upon material delivery turn in required documentation / sheets for charge out 100% accurate and complete within one hour;

• Neat, legible handwriting and documentation a must;

• Ability to pull items requested, return items to stock and input date regarding material transaction consistently and accurately in a timely manner;

• Inspect and complete reports related to safe operation and maintenance of material handling equipment;

• Follow verbal or written work instructions, standards and or QWI’s consistently, accurately, and safely.

Advanced duties and responsibilities

• Demonstrate knowledge of basic/intermediate mechanical, diesel, and electrical including working knowledge and recognition of parts in order to communicate various locomotive and engine components;

• Must be able to perform all supporting functions within engine, locomotive, cores, cage and shipping & receiving;

• Provide initial engine assembly with all parts needed to conduct remanufacture on different versions of the 645 and 710 engines;

• Pull and accurately document material for production (kits, mod material and order request) and deliver to the proper workstation on time. This includes but is not limited to:

o Crankshaft;

o Camshafts;

o Main caps;

o Other fallout material as required;

• Interact and communicate in a professional manner with all supporting functions: engine, locomotive, cores, cage and shipping & receiving.

Qualifications and Experience:

Preferred Skills:

• Basic PC knowledge for data entry;

• Self-starter, work with little or no supervision, work in a fast-paced environment, adjust to quick changing requirements and prioritize consistently, accurately, and safely;

• Proficient in two specific material handling areas (engine, locomotive, cores, cage and/or shipping & receiving);

• Forklift, pallet jack, mobile equipment and/or crane experience;

• Problem solving ability and ability to apply reasoning and common sense for appropriate resolutions.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions

• Strength – Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs, push and pull up to 75lb;

• Motion – Constant walking Frequent and sustained bending, crouching, stopping, kneeing, squatting and

overhead reaching and climbing ladders;

• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and hear audible alarms;

• Work Environment – Works on varied surfaces, concrete floors, and gravel, rail car and locomotive floors. Works at varied heights from floor level to tops of locomotives. Work in confined spaces. Nontemperature control environment, all weather conditions with high noise and high dust levels;

• Emotional Demands – Due to the working environment, noise, dust, personal protective equipment, employee must be comfortable working alone;

• Safety – Safety Sensitive positions because it works in and around active tracks, rail cars, locomotives, and other moving equipment. Employee must abide by all safety protocols, health/medical screenings and utilize all required PPE. Included but not limited to metatarsal boots, safety glasses, gloves, respirators, aprons, ear protection, etc.
